The Cable Car Hochgratbahn

THE HIGHEST MOUENTAIN OF THE WESTERN ALLGÄU – of course free of charge with OberstaufenPLUS

At 1,834 meters (6,017 ft), the Hochgrat is the highest mountain in the western Allgäu and a promising destination for all requirements with a wide variety of sports. The Hochgrat is located in the middle of the Nagelfluhkette nature park, which lies across borders between Germany (Allgäu) and Austria (Vorarlberg). The objective of the nature park is to preserve the unique natural and cultural landscape and sustainable tourism.

In order to be able to enjoy the wonderful view over the main alpine ridge, which extends from Lake Constance to the Oberstdorfer and Kleinwalsertaler mountains to the Zugspitze, the Hochgratbahn brings nature enthusiasts close to the summit every day. The mountain railway station is located at an altitude of 1,708 meters (5,603 ft) – with an ascent that goes skywards in both winter and summer to about 900 meters (2,953 ft). The ascent with a journey time of around 15 minutes and the fascinating view alone make the ride on the mountain railway a special experience.

In winter, the Hochgrat guarantees wonderful winter sports. Deep snow skiers, freeriders, snowshoe hikers, tobogganers and all those who aspire become one will find wonderful conditions on this mountain area. The Hochgrat is also “heaven sent”: due to it’s altitude of almost 1000 meters from the valley, speed flying is also a popular winter sport. Skiers and snowboarders will find diverse slopes with five to six kilometers of runs on the Hochgrat. Ski tourers and snowshoe hikers appreciate the varied mountain landscape with ascents and demanding descents.

When the snow has melted and the spring blooms cover the slopes, the Hochgrat transforms into a popular excursion and hiking destination with different easy and challenging routes until autumn. The premium hiking trail Luftiger Ridge, the Nagelfluh ridge hike, panoramic circular routes, valley and summit trails and descents via Seelen Alpe and Brunnenau-Scharte start at the mountain station
